How One Farm Uses Razor Tracking to Stay Ahead During Harvest
Zach Johnson, better known as the Millennial Farmer, recently featured Razor Tracking on his popular YouTube channel. A fifth-generation farmer from Minnesota, Zach is passionate about using technology to bring greater efficiency and safety to modern agriculture.
As his family farm gears up for another demanding harvest season, Zach faces the usual challenges of managing equipment across hundreds of acres with multiple drivers and tight timelines. This year, he’s leveling up by outfitting his fleet — including semi-trucks, a fuel trailer, and even his John Deere 9870 combine — with Razor Tracking’s Premier Trackers and Elite Dash Cameras. These tools are helping streamline operations, enhance fleet visibility, and improve overall safety.
“The goal was simple,” Zach explains. “We wanted to know exactly where our equipment was at any given time — whether it was coming back to the yard or sitting idle at the grain elevator. With multiple drivers out, this gives us complete visibility.”
Fast Install, Big Impact
Installation was simple. The Razor Tracking team walked Zach through the process, mounting Premier Tracking Devices in the three semis. The trackers quickly synced, allowing real-time updates across both Razor Tracking’s platform and the John Deere Operations Center. “The first truck installation took maybe 15 minutes,” Zach says. “Now, I can see everything right from my phone or computer.”
A Smarter, More Connected Fleet
With GPS and engine data flowing through the CAN BUS system protocol, each vehicle now reports its location, speed, and more — even pinging every 15–20 seconds while in motion.
In addition to tracking devices, the farm also installed an Elite Dash Camera in one of the semis — useful not only for monitoring logistics but also for insurance purposes in the event of an incident on the road.
“We don’t need to watch my dad eat lunch,” Zach jokes. “But it’s good peace of mind if there’s ever a fender bender or issue on the highway.”
Simple Integration, Seamless Access
Setting up the integration with the John Deere Operations Center was pretty easy. Once the devices were installed, Zach simply inputted each vehicle’s VIN, copied an API key, and was up and running in minutes.
“Now, whether I’m in the yard, in the combine, or at home, I can see exactly where everyone is and what they’re doing,” he says. “We’ve got a lot of equipment, a lot of moving parts. Razor Tracking helps us stay on top of it all.”
